"Help me humans!"
Çiğdem Akkaya Yener, a resident of Bursa, moved in with her
family in Sivas with her tabby cat, "Paşa", who suffered from
stress and depression due to the move. Paşa was treated with
common antidepressant medications and responded positively
to the treatment.
Five months ago, Yener consulted Veterinarian İbrahim Özmen
for Paşa, who had begun screaming and causing damage at night
inside the house. A general examination revealed that Paşa was
experiencing stress and depression due to the move. Veterinarian
Özmen began treating Paşa and decided to use antidepressant
medications used in human treatment. Paşa responded positively
to the controlled doses of antidepressants. After some time,
he regained his health.
Veterinarian İbrahim Özmen, who stated that some illnesses
can cause stress in pets, added:
"They are individuals, too, and they have their own routines.
They have food, water, and litter habits. Changing this routine
can stress them. Cats using a food bowl they don't like, or getting
in and out of a litter box they find difficult, or a guest visiting
the house disrupts this routine.
They can become stressed because their routine is disrupted.
Even if their routine doesn't change, there are things that stress
them. Cat owners experience psychological changes, divorce,
a change in household population, or the acquisition of a second
pet, which can cause them to hear frequencies we don't. They
are 15 times more affected by radiation than we are. Wi-Fi
can increase stress. Poor quality food, excessive infringement
of their personal space—all of these can stress cats.
The antidepressant TLC works best.
When stressed, they often exhibit behavioral issues such as
urinating, shedding, and even acting aggressively toward
themselves. They can bite their tails and tear out their own
fur. They can attack their owners and destroy objects.
"They can cause damage and scream at night. Of course,
these things also reduce the pet owner's quality of life.
Depression and stress are clinically diagnosed. First,
tests are performed, and if nothing unusual is detected,
we determine whether it's depression or stress. In this case,
we sometimes use herbal products, but when they're not
enough, we also seek help from human antidepressants.
This has increased significantly recently. We used to see it
very rarely, but last summer, 15 percent of our patients
(animals) complained of depression. It used to be much less
common, but it's starting to increase. If this isn't addressed,
real organic problems begin to emerge. The immune system
is constantly suppressed, and the animal becomes sick.

Paşa's owner, Çiğdem Akkaya Yener, said, "We had
complaints of screaming at night for a long time. Numerous
tests were performed afterward. No problems were found.
Our doctor then recommended antidepressants. After
starting antidepressants, both of our quality of life really
improved. Because I couldn't sleep at night. I was also
bothered by my cat's constant screaming. After using
antidepressants, this problem disappeared. We no longer
have this problem."
