Not exactly what the Tokat tourism board wanted to hear.
Saniye Zengin (45) and Metin Zengin married in Ankara in
2005 and had four children together. But Saniye hanım began
having psychological problems, even staying at a hospital in
Ankara for 15 days. Upon her discharge, the doctor told her to
take her medicine regularly.
However (!), Saniye hanım neglected her medicine, prompting
her husband to threaten to take her to her village in Tokat unless
she took her pills. Saniye was loath to go to Tokat, so she came
up with a bizarre plan - she would kill her youngest child and
go to prison rather than to Tokat (!).
So, in accordance with her plan, on 20 September 2018 she
tried to smother her two-year-old son Emre when no one else
was at home. Somehow, the child did not die and Saniye, in
a fit of remorse, threw water on Emre's face and he opened
his eyes. Nevertheless, when the other family members came
home and learned of the situation, an ambulance was called
to take Emre to a hospital.
Saniye hanım "explained" to the court that since she wasn't
taking her medicine she didn't know what she was doing.
She was jailed for 7 months and then released, pending the
continuation of her trial. Now, after many efforts to determine
her state of mind at the time of the incident, her 11 year, 3
month sentence has been reaffirmed by an appeals court and
she returned to prison last week.
The prison is in Tokat! (just kidding :)).
