U.S. Embassy Attackers Just Criminal Slackers

Ahmet Çelikten, one of two men who attacked the U.S. Embassy in
Ankara a few days ago by firing 6 shots at a guard post, has a police
record for three crimes including personal assault. He had escaped
from prison and was on the lam at the time of the attack. Osman
Gündaş, the other attacker, has a police record of 6 crimes, including
negligent assault, threats, car theft, and intentional assault.

Police have found no connections of either suspect to any terror
organization. Çelikten fired the gun at the embassy while Gündaş
drove his own car, plate number 06 BDP 502.  In his statement,
Çelikten explained that "I called Osman and we got together.  We
drove around and drank alcohol and talked about the recent dollar
crisis, American threats against Turkey and the U.S. President's
pronouncements.  Fueled by the alcohol, we got angry and decided
to attack the embassy.  We were still drinking in the car as I shot
at the embassy.  No one told me to do it or forced me to do it. I
just got upset about these recent events and decided to do it."
