This sign actually means something in Sinop.
According to TÜİK's (Turkey Statistical Council) 2013
survey of "happiness", Sinop, on Turkey's Black Sea coast,
was chosen as the "happiest city" with a score of 77%.
Twenty years ago the Sinop provincial traffic
commission decided to remove all traffic lights to ease
traffic flow.
The only remaining traffic light is a traffic light in the
Korucuk neighborhood where the hospital is located.
In fact, because drivers in Sinop have become used to
yielding to each other and pedestrians, there are almost
no traffic accidents in Sinop. (!!!).
Sinop Mayor Baki Ergül said that the absence of traffic
lights in the city center is wonderful, noting that "this is
a symbol of civilization that shows how respectful and
measured our citizens are toward each other. If you are
touring around Sinop and you cross a street the cars
will stop and yield to you as if there were a traffic light."
Mayor Erdül added that "If a car doesn't stop for a
pedestrian then you know that drive is not from Sinop.
We are very proud of this special characteristic of ours.
In any case, our city is a happy one and an indicator of
this is that we don't have any traffic lights." (AMEN!)
