The shepherd returns to the flock.
On 24 July Umut Ali Özmen was grazing his sheep on the
Turkey-Armenia border when he strayed into Armenian
territory and was arrested. Umut Ali is the second child of
Altınay and Mustafa Özmen, who live in Küçükdurduran
village in Kars's Akyaka district.
On Şiş hill along the border, Umut Ali got a bit curious so
he went down the other side of the hill. But Armenian
villagers spotted him and soldiers arrested him for crossing
the border.
Turkish President Erdoğan called Armenian Prime Minister
Nikol Paşinyan to arrange for Umut Ali's release and on
Tuesday at 14:00 he returned to Turkey after 64 days. The
shepherd had to be transported from Yerevan, Armenia's
capital, to Georgia, from where he crossed back into Turkey
at the Posof border gate in Ardahan province.
About his captivity Umut Ali explained that "There was no
bad treatment over there. I was in a cell by myself and
communicated with them with hand signals. Missing one's
country is a very hard thing to explain."
Shepherd strayed into Armenia on the Kars border.
Returned via Yerevan to Posof, in Ardahan's border
with Georgia.
