Construction on Yusufeli Dam, Turkey's highest dam at 275-meters
in height, is continuing on the Çoruh River in Artvin. When completed
the dam, which is of the "double curvature thin arch"-type, will be the
world's third-highest dam of this type.
The multi-ton machines used in the construction are transported from
one slope to another by means of a cable-winch system. The dam is
being built with Turkish materials and by Turkish engineers. It will
generate 558 megawatts of electricty, enough to power a city of
650,000 people. The cost of the project is 2.5 billion TL (about
$300 million) and revenue from the electricty will be about 3 million
TL (about $400,000) per day.
Construction and industrial engineer Nihan Akkaya, who is working
at the Yusufeli Dam site, explained that "when the dam goes into
operation the annual contribution to the national economy will be
1.5 billion TL."
