recent TNT report about people-power vs.
mining interests.
There may be gold in them there hills but...
Villagers in Yeşilkent, Çiğdem and Üçpınar villages of Ordu's Ünye
district have again prevented mining company officials from drilling,
in their search for gold in the region. Tension between the mining
officials and the villagers prompted the Gendarmerie to send troops
to the scene.
However, the villagers' firm stance against gold exploration left the
firm's workers with no choice but to pack up their gear and leave,
to the sound of applause from the villagers.
"...and your tail-light is broken."
One of the villagers cited the threat that gold exploration in the area
poses for their own health and the environment, adding that "When
the mining officials came we gathered together. In response, they
said that some big-shot would come to give us information but no
one showed up."
"We asked who is conducting the gold search but they had no
license and none of them had ID cards. The response we got from
CIMER (presidential communications office) was that MTA
(Maden Teknik ve Arama/Mineral Research and Exploration)
was not doing any work in our area. We won't leave until they
do. In the end, they packed up their machines and left."
