You give some jerk a Hilti and look what happens...

The 3,200-year-old Hittite 'Karabel' bas-relief,  the most important one
related to Anatolian history, is no more.  Erman Ertuğrul of 'Arkeofili'
reported the day before  yesterday that treasure hunters have destroyed
the bas-relief. The treasure hunters thought there would be treasure
under the bas-relief so they tried to break through it with a Hilti drill
(!).  This is not the first time the bas-relief has been damaged - Nezih
Başgelen published a photo in 2016 that showed that acid has been
poured on it.

No treasure hunter would be caught dead (but should be)
without one.

'Karabel', which is 2.5 meters by 1.5 meters,  is situated on a hilltop
of the Karabel Pass along the Kemalpaşa-Torbalı road in Izmir.  The
bas-relief showed a male figure with a spear in his left hand and a bow
in his right hand.  Between the figure's head and the spear there was
a barely readable 'Luvice' (Hittite script) writing, which was translated
by David Hawkins in 1998, as follows:

Tarkasnawa, King of Mira (land).
(Son of) Alantalli, King of Mira land.
Grandson of (...), King of Mira land.
