On Saturday night, when COVID restrictions forbade citizens from
leaving their homes, police stopped a car driven by Burak A. on
Talas Boulevard in Melikgazi district of Kayseri province. A breath
test revealed that Burak A.'s alcohol level was over the limit. But
even more interesting to police was that his passenger was İsmail I.
(35) a prison fugitive wanted for four separate crimes. (!)
It turned out that Burak A. had picked up İsmail I., who was
hitchhiking. First, İsmail I. was fined 3,150 TL (about $400) for
violating the COVID curfew and then taken to the police station
for escaping from jail. As for driver Burak A., he was fined
1,460 TL (about $180) for drunk driving and having no insurance.
His license was revoked for six months and he was fined another
3,150 TL for violating the COVID curfew. (!)
