Poster boy for "no good deed goes unpunished"
Metro security guard Sinan Y. (22) faced a judge for the first
time in the case brought against him for letting four people
through the turnstiles at the Esenler metro station, by using
his reduced-fare card. In his own defense, Sinan explained
that "my aim was to help citizens in a hurry. I had no intention
of committing a crime."
Sinan Y. has not been jailed as his trial proceeds in Istanbul's
13th Court of First Instance, where he faces a a sentence of
up to seven years in jail for the 4.9 TL (2.50 USD) harm
he brought upon the metro system.
The lawyer for the Istanbul Transportation Authority, the
complainant, referred to the crime as 'major fraud' but
both the prosecutor and Sinan's lawyer rejected this
characterization. The judge, as well, disagreed with the
complainant's request to label the incident as 'major fraud'
and postponed the hearing in order to examine the file.
