In the 1960s there was an illegal excavation at the Zeugma Ruins
Site on the shore of the Euphrates River near the village of Belkıs,
about 10 kilometers from Nizip district of Gaziantep province.
As a result, twelve pieces of a mosaic known as 'Çingene Kızı'
(Gypsy Girl) were sold by an art trader named Peter Marks to
Bowling Green University in Ohio in 1965 for $35,000.

After the purchase, the University displayed the mosaic in its
Wolfe Arts Center.  Five months ago Turkey's Culture and Tourism
Ministry signed an agreement with Bowling Green for the return of
the 12 mosaic pieces and they arrived in Gaziantep by plane on 28
November.

The complete 'Çingene Kızı' mosaic is now on display at the Zeugma
Mosaic Museum in Nizip.
