(Hürriyet Newspaper, 3 December 2018)
Asking for divine guidance after suffering writer's block.
Iranian Ali Karimi (19) converted to Christianity from Islam and
fled to Georgia. In hopes of reaching his older brother, who had
emigrated to Spain years ago, Karimi entered Turkey with a fake
passport. He was caught when he tried to board a Madrid-bound
plane at Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Istanbul on 25 November.
In court, Karimi told the judge he was afraid to return to Iran
because he is a Christian convert and is considered a 'mürted'
(apostate) in Iran. In response, the court ordered his release
with the following conditions:
-- sign in at the police station each Sunday;
-- read the Koran and the Bible, summarizing the similarities
and differences between them and submit a one-page essay
each Friday to the court. (!)
Karimi accepted the conditions and was released. However, he
failed to submit his first essay last Friday. (!)
