In Ankara, at the first hearing of the case against Prof. Dr. Hasan Bilgili,
accused of beating and sexually assaulting veterinarian C.B., who works
at Bilgili's animal hospital, the anesthetic 'propofol' sparked controversy.
During the hearing, C.B. testified that she saw propofol on a table. When
Bilgili's partner and fellow suspect Serkan D. was asked about claims
that he had given C.B. serum and propofol, he asserted that he had only
given her serum. C.B.'s lawyer Asli Arihan then asked Serkan D.
whether he was aware that veterinarians like him are not authorized to
give medicine (to humans) by means of serum and whether he knew
the procedure in any case. Serkan D. insisted that he gave C.B. the
serum properly but did not have knowledge of the procedure (!).

C.B. explained the trauma she experienced from the incident at the
hearing. She noted that she had called gynecologist Huseyin S., who
is also a suspect, to ask him about the effects of propofol. C.B. said
that when she asked the question Huseyin S.'s tone of voice changed
drastically and he wanted to know if she was planning to file a
complaint. C.B. said at the hearing "at that moment I thought that
all three of them were in this together."
Also in Ankara, anesthesia technician Ayse Karaman (25) was found
dead in the home of her boyfriend Dr. Ozgur Tarhan (46) on 29 July.
Tarhan is accused of administering propofol to Karaman. In court,
emergency medicine expert Dr. Keziban Ucar Karabulut explained
that "propofol acts very quickly, slowing down the brain and the
nervous system. It's sometimes used for people with sleeplessness
problems."
