                                          "Nein! Nein!"

At yesterday's TÜSİAD (Turkish businessmens' association)
conference on China in Istanbul a scandal erupted when the principle
guest speaker, ex-Germen President Christian Wulff, was asked to
give his speech in English instead of German. (!)

As Wulff began his remarks in German, conference organizers quickly
asked him to switch to English because they had failed to secure a
German-Turkish translator for him.  Wulff, however, demurred,
saying pointedly "I hope that next year I can give my speech with
a German-Turkish translator.  I'm sorry but I cannot give my speech
now in English.  I suggest that you hold future conferences without
me."

A miffed and wounded Wulff spent the remainder of the
conference with his Youtube playlist.

Diplomats from the German Consulate then scolded TÜSİAD
General Secretary Bahadır Kaleağası and his team for the lapse.
The Germans noted that prior to Wulff's appearance, TÜSİAD
was told that his remarks would be given in German but the
TÜSİAD team insisted that they were told that Wulff would speak
in English.  When TÜSİAD proposed that a conference attendee
(not a certified German-Turkish translator) could do the interpreting,
the Germans refused, noting that "the speaker is a President!"

The day before yesterday Wulff had met with TÜSİAD members
in a closed session where he spoke German and his remarks were
translated into Turkish.

Wulff rebuffed this TÜSİAD offer, too.
