Once upon a time...
Maps of Istanbul from 1,200 years ago show two island members
of the Princes' Islands close to the shore. An earthquake in the year
1010 wiped the two island off the map. Today, when the 'poyraz'
wind blows from the Anatolian shore, these 'Vordonisi Rocks' can be
seen.
Dr. Ahmet Bilir of Düzce University has been doing research about
Vordonisi, which the Byzantines called 'Küçük Ada' (little island),
the Ottomans called 'Manastır Rocks' and current mariners call
'Höreke Rock' or 'Dilek Rocks'. In connection with Dr. Bilir's
research, undersea photographers Ali Ethem Keskin and Yavuz
Pilevneli have been conducting dives in the area of Vordonisi.
Milliyet reporter Gökhan Karakaş participated in the diving
operations, as well.
Offshore 'poyraz' wind makes the Vordonisi rocks visible.
The divers examined the monastery built by Istanbul Patriarch Fotios,
who lived there from 810 to 893, on one of the sunken islands, 1.5
kilometers off the coast of Bostancı-Küçükyalı, between Maltepe,
on the shore, and Kınalı Island. Vordonisi was used as a place of
exile in Byzantine times.
Underwater photographer Pilevneli noted that he had taken pictures of
portions of the monastery and diver Serco Ekşyan observed that "up
until now, all research has been on the surface. Our most recent dives
and pictures taken from the air show the monastery walls, so a more
detailed investigation is warranted."
Underwater expert Ali Ethem Keskin explained that "my goal on
a previous dive was to find a 45 degree wall. Diver Serco Ekşyan had
talked about a strong surprise current that could drag us away,
so I was concerned about that. But we didn't encounter it. We
anchored our boat 100 meters from the rocks to avoid hitting them
and swam to the dive point. We examined the man-made blocks we
saw. Otherwise the area is covered with starfish, sea urchins and
mussels. Nevertheless, diving into such a mysterious sunken
island is a thrilling experience."
Vordonisi was situated between Kınalı, topmost of the Princes'
Islands, and the Anatolian (Asian) shore of Istanbul.
