The number of young Turks wanting to enter the USA via Mexico is
increasing every day. Consequently, measures have begun in Istanbul
to screen potential illegal asylum seekers prior to flights. These measures
are being implemented not by Turkish Airlines (THY) but, rather, by
private security company. Boarding may be prevented and even those
who successfully board may be returned from the countries they land in.
Henceforth, it will be more difficult for Turkish youths to fly to Mexico,
Colombia, Panama, Cuba and Brazil.
The number of Turks entering the USA through Mexico:
October- December 2019: 636
2021: 6,945
2022: 21,968
Most of the travelers in question have been from Çorum and Ağrı
provinces (!).
Mexican visas can be obtained with no charge over the internet. But
regardless of hotel reservations or other "proof" of remaining in
Mexico or the other mentioned countries, based on the new stricter
measures you may be blocked from boarding. Increasingly, Turkish
youths are voicing their frustration with these measures on social
media and on Instagram, in particular.
But many Turkish youths have returned to Turkey having lost their
money to traffickers in Mexico and elsewhere, and, of course, having
failed to enter the USA illegally. Many of those who have snuck into
the USA have found themselves going hungry and homeless.
