                            Hurry up and wait.

An agreement will take effect on 31 March under which Bulgaria and
Romania will gain partial access to the European Union's free movement
Schengen visa region.  Consequently, entry controls at the Hamzabeyli-
Lesovo customs gate on the Turkish-Bulgarian border have been ,
tightened by Bulgarian officials and Turkish TIR (Transportation
Internationale Routiére/long-haul tractor-trailers) are suffering in a
10-kilometer (!) back-up on the road to the border.

The GTİ (Turkish Customs and Tourism Affairs) parking lot at
Hamzabeyli is filled to capacity with 750 vehicles.  One of the Turkish
drivers spending hours in line, Mesut Seçkin, lamented that "the Bulgarian
police have intensified their procedures and the result is this backup.
There has to be a change in these procedures."

If the backup wasn't bad enough, the truckers also have to deal with
migrants trying to sneak into their trucks to cross the border.  Seçkin
noted that "there are a lot of migrants on this road and they jump into
our trucks and rip off the customs ropes.  So we take turns keeping
watch for them.  Otherwise, when you reach the customs gate the
officials will see the seals broken and catch migrant stowaways in
the chassis.  Or they will have damaged your vehicle in some way."
