Suakin Island is in the middle of the map.
In the aftermath of the coup in Sudan two weeks ago, the matter of an
agreement between Sudan and Turkey over Suakin Island on the Red
Sea coast has engendered speculation. The former regime of Omar el-
Başir had approved the transfer of Suakin, an Ottoman possession in
the 1500s, to Turkey for 99 years.
However, the leader of the current transitional council, Abdulfettah
el Burhan, has declared that "Sevakin is an inseparable part of Sudan
and we will never agreed to having a foreign military presence in
Sudan."
Nevertheless, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy
announced yesterday that claims that the agreement has been canceled
are not true.
Suakin Island is just about opposite Mecca on today's Sudan's
Red Sea coast.
