Karain Muhtarı, “Bu sandıklar köyümüzün mirasıdır”
Kütüphane kurucusu Rasim Pehlivanoğlu:
"Köylülerin okuma oranlarında ciddi artış oldu"
"Book Lending Box" carried by library's MVP employee.

Years after Rasim Pehlivanoğlu started his donkey-borne library
in Karain village of Nevşehir's Ürgüp district in the 1950s, the boxes
the donkeys carried have been found.  Karain resident Beşir Dinler
found the boxes in a storeroom.

According to Pehlivanoğlu, "I was assigned as a teacher to Karain
in 1947 and taught there for 6 years.  The students remained in
class until the Spring, when they went to work in the fields.  Bekir
Koca was looking after the library in the village and we decided to
bring the books to the people working the fields in the villages via
the donkeys.  That's how the donkey-borne library started."

Karain's current village chief Osman Soylu explained that "the
donkey-borne library is part of our heritage.  The building I use
as my office now was where the library was then.  We are going
to put the boxes we found out where everyone can see them."
