In Elazığ's Sivrice district, the rabbits on a little island in Lake Hazar
are surviving the winter thanks to fruits and vegetables brought to them
by the local Gendarmerie unit.  Sürek village chief Ahmet Gönültaş
noted that "ın the winter months the grass on the island dries up, so the
Gendarmerie has been a godsend for the rabbits."

The little island is about 200 meters from the shore of Lake Hazar and
in the 20 years since Gendarmerie personnel left a pair of rabbits on
the island the population has expanded. (like rabbits!)

                                    Other duties as assigned.

The island is known among the local populace as "rabbit island" because
of  its "long-eared residents". The teams from the provincial Gendarmerie
Command purchase foods such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, carrots (!),
apples and tangerines for the rabbits in the village market to bring to
particular points on the island.   As the teams withdraw from the island,
the rabbits emerge from their hideouts to feast on their bounty.  At
times, though, the rabbits come right up to the soldiers and eat out of
their hands.
