Accommodations have improved over the century.
Wealthy people from Turkey and their families are continuing to obtain
citizenship from Malta. According to Malta's official gazette dated 31
December 2020, in the year 2019 of the 3,170 individuals who were
granted Maltese citizenship, 56 were Turks.
The Turks included businessmen, academics, artists and athletes, all
of whom made the required "investments" in Malta to acquire
citizenship. In 2004 Malta, which has a population of 600,000,
became a member of the European Union (EU) so its citizens can travel
on a Maltese passport to the Schengen countries in Europe and to the
U.S. without a visa. Foreigners who contribute at least 650,000 Euros
to the Malta National Fund (MNF) are accepted for citizenship 12
months later.
Those who apply for citizenship must pay between 25,000 and 55,000
Euros for each family member. Another condition, in addition to the
contribution to the MNF, is owning property in Malta worth at least
350,000 Euros or paying annual rent of no less than 16,000 Euros.
In addition, applicants for citizenship must purchase a 50,000 Euros
state bond from a bank in Malta.
With regard to taxes, another incentive for foreigners to invest is
that there is no tax on capital. Business owners pay a 35% tax on
their profits but get 30% of that back. Company owners are not
required to reside on Malta.
