A.V.C.'s motto: "Forget the fuss, remember the bus."
A passenger bus that belongs to İstanbul Otobüs A.Ş., but which operates
within the city's İETT municipal transit system, was parked by driver
Ayhan Taşkıner along the road in Maltepe the evening before last after
he finished his shift. At five o'clock yesterday morning Taşkıner went
to resume duty with his bus but found it had gone missing. (!)
Taşkıner notified İstanbul Otobüs, which tracked the bus using GPS to
Taksim Square on the other side of Istanbul. Police found the open
and empty bus parked in an underpass at Taksim and delivered the bus
back to Istanbul Otobüs. It appears that Taşkıner had left the keys in the
ignition. (!)
Taşkıner explained that "The guy hijacked the bus and drove it to
Taksim. He knew how to operate it. Like a bus professor!" Police
determined that the culprit was A.V.C. (33), who has a record of 35
crimes, based on the bus camera recording and fingerprints. In his
statement to police, A.V.C., who lives in Kartal near Maltepe, said
simply that "I needed a vehicle so that's why I took the bus. I didn't
have a chance to give it back."
