De-escalation will be a step-by-step process.
At the MetroCity shopping center in Levent, Istanbul, the escalators
have come to a halt. A debt dispute has caused the escalators to be
dismantled. Seda Gengönü, a former owning partner of the
shopping center, borrowed $5 million from a factoring firm putting
up MetroCity as collateral. (!)
Collateral damage.
But when Gengönü couldn't pay her debts, the factoring firm went
to court and got a seizure order. As a result, officials came to the
shopping center yesterday and dismantled the escalators, stopped
the elevators and cut the electricity. Generators will provide power
for two days but after than the situation is unclear.
