The Ünalan Bomber

Police think the bomb was built in a cabin in the woods...

Last June in Üsküdar's Ünalan neighborhood, on the Asian side of
Istanbul, there was a mysterious explosion in the basement of an
apartment building.  At first, police recorded the incident as an
accident but a review of security camera footage proved otherwise.

In the images, a hooded person is seen putting a bomb at the base
of the door of retired policeman Ali E. in the early morning hours
of 19 June.  A week later, on 26 June, when Ali E. opened the door
he moved a flower pot, setting off the bomb.  The explosion threw
Ali E. back into his house and he suffered wounds in a number of
places.

When police first arrived at the scene, they saw that their former
colleague Ali E. had been filling gun cartridges so they assumed
that this had caused the explosion. However, Ali E. insisted that
he was the victim of a bomb attack, which the video footage
confirmed.


  Police are searching for this man.

In reviewing the video, police noticed that a week before the
explosion, in the early morning hours of 19 June, the hooded
bomber strolled around the neighborhood before placing the
bomb under the flower pot at Ali E.'s door.  Bomb experts think
that the bomb was movement-sensitive, so when Ali E. moved
the flower pot he set off the bomb. 

The bomber has yet to be identified and Ali E. cannot think
of anyone who might have done it, out of enmity or debt or
for any other reason.
