//Ed. Note: During WW II Turkey tried to remain neutral but flirted
with both sides. In the early years, with German successes, Ankara
signed a non-agression pact and a trade agreement (1941) with
Berlin. This was probably the time-frame when the bomb shelter
was built in Ankara. Later, as Germany faltered, the Turks became
more cozy with the Allies an, in fact, declared war on Germany,
its World War I ally, on 23 February 1945.//
In accordance with precautions Turkey took during World War II, a
bomb shelter was built at the bottom of the Ankara Fortress with the
help of Nazi Germany. The shelter will now become a museum.
The Turkish government and armed forces provided construction
security for the bomb shelter, which was built with support from
Nazi Germany. The 1,200 square meter shelter could accommodate
3,600 people in the short term and 1,200 people for a longer period.
It is thought that the shelter, which has three entrances with steel
doors, was built in the early 1940s.
The shelter was 3.5-4 meters wide and 3-3.5 meters high, with
10 large rooms, 15 normal-size rooms, 10 corridors, 12 toilets, 8
urinals, 12 washrooms, 2 water pumps and a 1-ton capacity water
depot. There were 2 airconditioning systems and a heating system,
as well as 2 generators if city electric power was cut off. To protect
against a gas attack, there were 4 air filters.
In 1964, the shelter was turned into a general-purpose shelter and
it is now slated to become a museum.
