Omar's motto.
Nearly 5 years ago, Omar Munir was in his last year at
William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey,
studying computer engineering, when he and 5 friends
came to Istanbul on a vacation. Late one night in the
Beyazit section of Istanbul, Munir was victimized by
a pick-pocket and lost his passport, ID card and money.
That incident changed Munir's life. As he waited for
his new passport, Munir learned that his mother had
died. He then began to work in a fish store to make
some money and he met a girl from Artvin province
named Goncagül, with whom he married. The couple
now has two children - İbrahim who is a year and a
half old, and Zeynep, a two-month-old baby girl.
Munir's long-hair dictionary.
Munir explained that "Once my mother died, I had
no source of income. A worker at my hotel in Istanbul
suggested I get a job at a fish store in Kumkapı. It was
winter, the snow was falling and it was the first time
I ever worked in my life. I put my hands into the ice
and they froze. But the fish store owner became like
a father to me, giving me an overcoat and teaching me
Turkish one word at a time."
Munir's older sister, who is a doctor in the U.S., has
come to Turkey twice in order to bring him back to
America but he won't go. Munir says that "My friends
at work are like my family. When I don't go to work
I miss them. We're like brothers. I'm staying in Turkey
for the sake of love."
