A net gain for humans and nature.
Fishermen's nets made of strong synthetic thread and
destined to remain in the sea depths around Istanbul's
Princes' Islands for hundreds of years have been removed
from the sea bottom by volunteer divers Serco Ekşiyan,
Volkan Narcı and Ercan Akpolat.
Removing just one net required the 3 divers to conduct
at least 3 or 4 dives. Akpolat explained that "Since 2011
we've collected about 20,000 meters of nets", which were
then sent to Karacalar village in Erzincan's Üzümlü
district, situated at an altitude of 1,900 meters.
Akpolat continued, saying that "There, we spread these
nets out to protect the fields and orchards from wild birds.
The nets' openings are very tiny so even many insects are
unable to penetrate them."
