Lena's not goin' anywhere!
In Izmir, the manager of an apartment filed a complaint
against Halime and Bahattin Demir, both of whom are
hearing-impaired, because they were keeping a dog in
their apartment, which is against building rules. Manager
M.N.K. sent the Demir couple a notice about the dog but
they ignored it. A court ruled that the couple must comply
with the building rules regarding pets.
However, a higher court reviewed the decision and
unanimously agreed to void the lower court's ruling
because "in her appeal petition, Halime Demir stated that
the couple kept their dog Lena in their apartment because
the dog assists them with their hearing impairments. The
lower court did not sufficiently examine this aspect of
the case."
The Demirs' lawyer Senem Demirel noted that Golden
Retriever Lena is an aide to her clients, "not just a pet."
