Old Ertuğrul seems to be looking askance at his modern double.
"Diriliş", the program on TRT about Ertuğrul Gazi, the father of Osman,
the founder of the Ottoman Empire, who fought against the Mongol
invaders of Anatolia, has become embroiled in the U.S. "birthright"
controversy. The star of the program, Engin Altan Düzyatan, and his
wife decided to have their second child, a daughter named Alara, born
in the U.S. so she could have U.S. citizenship.
Samsun Parliamentarian Bedri Yaşar of the İYİ Party, declared in
remarks he made at a meeting of the Parliament's KIT Commission
that although he watches the program with pleasure, "but the star of the
show, Engin Altan Düzyatan, and his wife had their second child
born in the USA, so the child would be an American citizen. It would
have been better if our friend, who portrays this historic Turkish hero,
had shown a bit more sensitivity to this matter. While you're portraying
the historic Turkish personality Ertuğrul Gazi, the fact that your child has
become an American citizen wounds us deeply. Along with portraying
this historic character, your presentation of the '3'te 3 Tarih program
(as history-based quiz show) is inappropriate, as far as we are
concerned."
Reacting to the controversy...even a hero can cry.
