"What would Sultan Süleyman do?..."
In the presidential election in the Central American country of El
Salvador, Nabib Bukele (37), of Ottoman Palestinian roots, was
the clear winner. Bukele campaigned on an anti-corruption platform
and promised to lower the crime rate in the country. His victory put
an end to political domination by the country's two central parties
that has lasted since the civil war in 1992.

Bukele, the former mayor of the capital San Salvador, won with 54%
of the vote. His slogan was "If nobody steals, there's plenty of money."
His nickname is 'swallow' (as in the bird) and his roots lie in the
Lebanon of Ottoman times. His ancestors immigrated from Lebanon
in the early 20th century and his father was a well-known Moslem
businessman. El Salvadorans have been trying to flee to the USA
because of unemployment and the high crime rate in their country.
