There's magic in the air!
In Istanbul, two sisters sought out Ziyettin Çelik (72), a.k.a. 'Ziyettin
Hoca', who is known as an 'üfürükçü' (someone who claims to be able
to cure people by breathing on them (!)), and asked him to have charms
prepared so that their father would break up with the woman he was
involved with. In response, Çelik told the girls that "your father's
girlfriend has put a curse on you two. I can break the curse with
5,000 TL-worth of saffron and chicken feathers."
A few days later the sisters went back to Çelik with 5,000 TL (about
$850) and he prepared the charms. But a week later, Çelik claimed
that the charms had not worked and he needed another 10,000 TL
to achieve success. So the girls gave Çelik another 10,000 TL (!).
Subsequently, Çelik told one of the sisters, H.S., that he wanted
10,000 TL to break a curse on her boyfriend. At first, H.S. refused
but then relented and went to Çelik's home, where he gave her tea
to drink and then tried to undress her. Çelik explained that as he
read the charm and burned it the smoke would have to touch H.S.'s
skin in order to have the proper effect. But after H.S. drank the
tea and the smoke was blown around she passed out and Çelik
raped her.
H.S. filed a criminal complaint against Çelik and the public
prosecutor brought charges against him for a sexual attack and
fraud. In the indictment it was stated that sex stimulents and
creams were found in the suspect's home. The court sentenced
Çelik to 21 years and 9 months in jail. As H.S. left the court in
tears, it was learned that two additional cases had been filed
against Çelik for similar crimes. He was acquitted in one and
the other is on appeal.
