Oghenevwegba Timothy Golah worked as a university-trained
engineer in a sugar factory in Nigeria before coming to Istanbul
in 2018 to work. Golah sought a job teaching English but was
unsuccessful. So instead, he got himself a 2-year work permit and
a job in a textile workshop in Kasımpaşa, Istanbul.
But Golah had to work 11 hours a day for just 50 TL (about $4) at
a sewing machine that he operated by constantly pushing a pedal.
After a year of this work he fell ill and last March, realizing that
his legs were failing him, he went to a doctor. Golah was diagnosed
with very low blood pressure and a widespread infection in his body.
He had to quit his job but having no financial resources, he was
turned away by a number of hospitals.
"Urfalı Mehmed", left, to the rescue!
Golah, however, was able to make contact with Mehmet Yeralan,
known as "Urfalı Mehmed", a good samaritan in the Tarlabaşı section
of the city, who made Golah's plight known via social media. Then,
the Istanbul Health Directorate intervened and placed Golah in the
Okmeydanı State Hospital for treatment of his as-yet unspecified
ailment.
The weak and listless Golah explained from his hospital bed that
"I was never sick in Nigeria. When I came here I could find the job
I wanted but I had to work to stay alive. That's why I took the job
in the textile workshop, where I worked 11-12 hours a day. In
particular, my job was to rapidly push a machine pedal and the boss
standing over me relentlessly yelled 'faster! faster!' I earned 1,000
TL per month (about $150)."
"I'm a university graduate, an engineer. I want to get a masters degree.
I wasn't able to do that in Nigeria so I came here with high hopes but
to no avail. No one can determine exactly what my ailment is. All I
want to do now is get out of bed and be able to walk."
