Just for saying "I do".
An element of the Turkish Penal Law that was removed 11
years ago, relating to amnesty for those jailed for raping minors
if they married the victim, has returned with a last-minute proposal
from AKP Parliamentarians.
And in the believe-it-or-not category...
According to the AKP proposal, an individual who raped a minor
without using force, threats and tricks prior to 16 November 2016
would be released from prison if he agrees to marry the victim.
While opposition parties CHP and MHP objected to the proposal,
Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ claimed that the proposal would
solve a big problem: "there are a lot of people in jail, even though
they did marry their victims."
There are between 3,000 and 4,000 people in jail now who have
raped underage girls. If the proposal becomes law then these
people would be released from prison if they agreed to marry
the girls they raped (!).
Is this even worth discussing?
