Dr. Cengiz Karın of Erciyes University in Kayseri has found previously
unseen documents about property in Iraq belonging to Ottoman Sultan
Abdülhamid II in the British National Archives.  The documents are
British intelligence reports that tracked the heirs of the Sultan up until
1947.

According to one of the reports, dated 6 September 1921, when Istanbul
was under British occupation, the names of the Sultan's heirs who had
applied to the British court for their inheritance rights were listed as
follows:

"Abdülhamid II's wives: Bedr-i Felek, Emsal-ı Nur, Müşfika, Saz-kar,
Peyveste, Naciye, Behice and Fatma Hanım.

Abdülhamid II's sons: Mehmed Selim Efendi, Ahmed Efendi,
Burhaneddin Efendi, Abdürrahim Efendi, Abid Efendi, Nureddin
Efendi, Abdülkadir Efendi.

Abdülhamid II's daughters: Zekiye Sultan, Naile Sultan, Ayşe Sultan,
Sadiye Sultan, Refia Sultan and Naime Sultan."

Dr. Kartın, who worked in the British Archives for 6 years, explained
that "According to the documents, a number of companies discussed
the inheritance matter with the members of the Sultan's dynasty, one
of which was Central Mining and Investment Corporation Ltd.  (still
today very much in the thick of the Middle East oil and gas industry).

This company wanted to be the sole owner of land along the Kerkük-
Mosul oil pipeline route but American officials declared that the Sultan's
heirs had no valid claims to the land.  The Caliph, Abdülmecid Efendi,
applied to the U.S. administration on behalf of the Sultan's heirs but
his appeals fell on deaf ears."
