Kitten heard to remark: "I'd given up on humans, but maybe
there's still some hope..."
The day before yesterday, heavy rain inundated the Istanbul
neighborhoods of Pendik, Kartal and Tuzla so municipal road crews
were dispatched to help with the resulting problems. Crew member
Metin Keskin noticed a kitten drowning in the water, plucked it from
the gutter and gave it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. When Keskin
heard a 'meow' he rushed the kitten the Tepeören Street Animals
Care Shelter in Pendik.
Keskin explained that "we were working to get the road open after
the rain when we saw the kitten. It was unconscious, like dead. So
we implemented our first aid training, evacuating the water from
the kitten's mouth, massaging and then mouth-to-mouth. We heard
a 'meow' and rushed the kitten to the shelter. The kitten is doing
well and I'm very happy because we saved a life."
The cat's meow...a lovely sound.
Veterinarian Mevlüt Maytalman confirmed that the kitten is now
in good shape. He noted that "when the kitten came in it was wet
and its body temperature had fallen. We put it in an incubator to
warm it up. Now the kitten is doing fine. After 24 hours, we'll
offer it first to the road crew that saved it."
As for a name for the kitten, Keskin said simply that "this is
Istanbul's kitten now and it belongs to all of us. Whatever the
people of Istanbul want to name it is fine with me."
