Prospective 'Hizzoner' Barsik and woeful two-legged competitors.
In the Siberian city of Barnaul, a cat has won a poll conducted
to elect a new mayor. Over 5,400 people participated in the
social media-based poll and Barsik the cat garnered 91% of the
votes.
Even though the poll is not official, it showed the public's disgust
with the corruption in the city. Mayor Igor Savintsev resigned
in August after being accused of selling municipal lands to his
relatives' companies. His son Maksim, who will be tried for fraud,
has fled to Thailand.

Resurrection with a powerful purpose.
Anger has taken hold over a proposed thermal power station in
the town of Çatalağzı in Kilimli district of Zonguldak province.
There are already 3 power stations in the district, a fourth is under
construction and approval has been given for a fifth, prompting
the populace to rebel.
Yesterday, a crowd of about 500 people marched to the municipal
wedding hall to participate in a meeting about "Environmental
Effects Evaluation" (ÇED). CHP (Republican Peoples Party) Mayor
Adnan Akgün, who opposes the power stations, was carried by the
group in a coffin and wore a funeral gown.
Mayor Akgün emerged from the coffin to say "shame on state that
puts its people in coffins!"
