Erzurum 100 years ago see this continuing TNT series to
experience winter in rural Erzurum during the war with
the Russians in 1916.
"Wait! You have to show your bus pass."
Students from remote villages who attend schools in Erzurum city
are being transported back to their villages by snowmobile for
the mid-semester break. Since snowfall makes rural roads nearly
impassable in eastern Turkey in the wintertime, snowmobiles are
the only transportation option.
For example, 7 students who live in Şahvelet field in Taşkesen village
of Tekman district, were picked up by a snowmobile at Toparlak
village, which is about 10 kilometer southeast of Erzurum, and
taken to their village near Tekman by snowmobile driver Yaşar Oğan.
The arduous trip takes 3 hours.
Fair-weather friend.
Next, Oğan will take 14 other students from Erzurum to their
snow-bound villages Aziziye and Çakalok near Ezrurum city, and
İncesu and Küçük Geçit near Tekman. Mert Gürbüz, an 8th grader
at Kazım Yurdalan Middle School in Erzurum, noted that "when I'm
at school in Erzurum I stay with my aunt. Now, we're going to our
villages for the 15-day semester break. Every year we go by
snowmobile so we're used to it. Even if the vehicle passes along
a cliff ledge we don't get scared."
Tekman district is about 50 kilometers southeast of Ezrurum.
