In August 1915, Fuad Bey was involved with fierce battles
with the Russian enemy around Tutak, followed by difficult
marches south to Patnos and west toward Malazgirt.

1 August 1915
We stayed behind the western ridges of Tutak. Life is misery. These
days are nothing but calamities.

2 August  1915
In the morning we left the area behind the western ridges of Tutak.
At mid-day we reached Dadıkan, together with the munitions and
supplies and were allowed to rest. We left here at midnight and passed
by a village.

3 August  1915
We continue moving. In the morning we came to Kanık, then Kılınç
Gediği. After two hours of rest we departed here. I lost track of the
munitions and supplies. By myself, I passed Zorab and Yarımlı before
coming to an area near a village at night. I spent the night here together
with some members of my regiment.

The Enemy has Escaped from the Places We Pass

4 August 1915
In the morning we departed here. Passing Yekmalı and Şirvansuyu, we
came to Buşik village which is about half an hour away from Karakilise
town center. Here we rested. The enemy keeps getting away. Late in the
afternoon we reversed course and turned to Karasu, where we spent the
night.

The battles with the Russians took place around Tutak.

5 August  1915
We departed Karasu in the morning, passing by villages. The fighting
was especially fierce. The enemy  was in an all-out attack. Our side and
our regiment were broken up. In retreat, we left Zorab together with the
munitions and supplies. We marched all night until dawn, at which time
we came to an area near a village and stopped.

6 August  1915
Late in the morning we moved again, passing by villages. In the evening
we reached the place where the expeditionary force’s heavy equipment
was kept. We spent the night here.

7 August  1915
We moved again in the morning…after passing some villages we came to
the area near Patnos village (Kürt Hüseyin Paşa village) where we spent
the night. I was terribly worn out today, feeling like I was sick. Ilyas took
good care of me.

8 August  1915
In the morning we moved to a place an hour away from Patnos, where
we settled in and spent the night.

9 August 1915
We left here in the morning, passing villages. My throat was parched.
Finally we reached Malazgirt late in the afternoon and settled in. This
place is in ruins.

10 August 1915
We rested during the day and left the Malazgirt area in the evening.
We passed a village and two hours later, after midnight, we rested until
morning.

From Malazgirt, Fuad Bey headed west toward Hinis.

11 August  1915
In the morning we moved. Once again we lost the munitions and supplies.
We passed Kop Yoncalık, forded the Murad and came to Simo village in
the evening. We spent the night.

12 August  1915
We departed Simo village in the morning, passed Karaçoban and another
village and at night reached Karaköprü, where we spent the night.

13 August  1915
We left Karaköprü in the morning and passed by Harami, Çevirce and
Alibaba villages, reaching another village in late afternoon or early
evening. We spent the night in a stable.

14 August 1915
Early in the morning we departed, passing villages. We rested for a bit
at Yıldız village before passing Mergzar. In the evening we spent the
night in the area of Tuzla among some trees.

15 August  1915
In the late afternoon we left Tuzla and moved to the area near Taşkesen.
We turned back here and returned to a neighborhood near Tuzla, where
I refreshed myself. Because I’d lost my judgement as the result of the
misery and calamities, and since I always suffer from my shy personality
anyway, I feel like I’ve started to make some big mistakes. But now
I’ve had the chance to think a bit and I’m relieved because I’m fixing
my mistake.

16 August  1915
We left the area around Tuzla in the morning, passing by villages and
by evening we came to a place in the countryside where we spent the
night.

17 August  1915
We departed here in the morning. Passing villages, we reached the
town center of Hinis in late afternoon. This place is rather big but
backwards.

18 August 1915
I sent a telegram to my father. We left Hinis late in the afternoon,
passing by Çevirme before we came to Harami where we spent the
night.

19 August  1915
We marched on from Harami in the morning, passing Karaköprü and
Karaçoban before coming to a village on the right bank of the Hinis
Stream. We spent the night.

20 August  1915
In the morning we departed here. I reached the northeastern flank of
Kürte village at mid-day and rejoined the regiment.
