The only Genoese still in jail in Istanbul - for their own
protection.
After the theft of the inscription on the Pir Mehmed Fountain, which
the famous Ottoman Prime Minister Sokollu Mehmed Paşa had
commissioned, Serhat Şahin, the head of the Association for the
Protection of Cultural Treasures and Architectural Restoration, has
appealed to the Number 2 Cultural Treasures Protection Council to
have the Genoese Yanıkapı inscription preserved.
Şahin wants the Yanıkapı inscription removed from its current
location and placed in the Istanbul Archeology Museum. The
Yanıkapı gate is the only one of the 12 gates remaining of the
Galata walls from the time of the Genoese traders in Istanbul.
The inscription above the gate is of the Genoese coat of arms,
with the cross of St. George in the center and the coats of arms
of the De Meruda and Doria families on either side.
Thieves have tried to steal the Genoese inscription a number of
times. Currently, the historical treasure is encased behind steel
bars to deter theft.
Yanıkapı is about where Pera and Galata border each other
on the shore of the Golden Horn.
