//ed. note: see yesterday's TNT report on this fast-breaking
Joe Yat Yung Chan. The very well-equipped tourist.
Mysterious details have emerged about American Joe Yat Yung
Chan, who came to Istanbul as a tourist and then disappeared,
only to be found later being held in Kocaeli Prison on a charge
of attempted murder,
It has been revealed that Chan was taken into custody by police
in Nusaybin district of Mardin province on 24 November 2016.
Chan was stopped for a routine traffic check while driving a car
with Istanbul license plates. In Chan's car police found two
professional cameras, a shoulder camera, one each large and small
drones, nine recording cassettes, a photograph machine, flash drive,
whistling compass and a laptop computer.
One of Chan's photos from his time in Istanbul. Oh what fun!
Chan was also in possession of a bullet-proof vest and was taken
to court on a charge of "conducting espionage activities". Chan
was released by the court but taken by Turkish immigration
officials to Kocaeli to be processed for deportation. While in
Kocaeli Chan allegedly trid to grab a policeman's weapon, which
led to the charge of "attempted murder" and his incarceration
in Kocaeli Prison
Nusaybin's tourism allure has diminished a bit lately.
