Söylemez with friendlier natives in Mali and, above left, in the
geography of the more accommodating Thracian tribes.
Ex-journalist and self-described traveler Hasan Söylemez related on
Twitter the tense moments he experienced, caught between two
warring tribes in the Republic of Mali, a country with a population
of 14 million in West Africa.
Söylemez, who puts his Africa documentaries on YouTube, described
the situation he and two guides experienced, as follows: "There have
been violent clashes between the Fulanis and the Dogons for three
years because of disagreements over cow pasture lands and water.
The latest one occurred a few weeks ago when the Dogons raided a
Fulani village, killing 32 people, including women, children and the
elderly. The attackers were so heartless and angry that after the
Gendarmerie left the village they went back and hacked another four
people to death. The atmosphere is very tense so I told Davut
(evidently one of Söylemez's guides) not to go there and stay in
the hotel, while I would go to the villages with a Dogon guide."
Söylemez related that (evidently sometime before) "When we got
to Sanga village they stopped us. Everyone was looking angrily at
Davut. A man of about 50 took our Dogon guide to one side and
said some things, gesturing toward Davut. The fellow's eyes were
red with rage. I went to the guide and asked 'what's the problem?'
In response the guide said 'He called the gang members on the phone
so we have to get out of here before they show up. Otherwise,
they'll cut us all up.' Amazed, I said to myself 'like killing chickens?'
but then I remembered that they had recently hacked 32 people to
death. I was frozen with fright looking at the angry faces so right
away we hopped in the car and got away."
