Yalova Mayor Vefa Salam spoke at the opening of a public toilet that
was the gift of the World Toilet Association (WTA). Referring to
criticism that there was a political aspect to the toilet, Mayor Salamasserted that "It is not a fair accusation. If they went to Suwon, our
sister city in South Korea, and saw the toilet museum there I think
they wouldn't comment in this manner. Last year the Suwon Mayor
visited us and offered to install a toilet."
"We thought it wouldn't be right to decline this offer and since
we are a Moslem nation, having a saying that 'cleanliness
breeds profits', we felt it would be right to use such a toilet.
WTA 's General Secretary Young Checl Kim proclaimed that
'today, by means of cooperation between Suwon, Yalova and
the WTA, we have the honor to open this public toilet. We have
done this in 16 countries and hope that this toilet will benefit
tourists who visit Yalova.'"
