Forbidden fruit...uh, vegetable.
In Diyarbakır's Kayapınar district last year, jeweler A.C. (33)
was jailed for shooting dead his 'imam nikâh' (unofficial
religious marriage) wife Leyla A. (24) in front of their two
children. A.C. claimed that Leyla hanım had committed suicide
(!). On the day of the murder, A.C.'s 'official' wife A.T.C. (32)
had corroborated her husband's account of the incident but after
moving in with her family in Istanbul, A.T.C. had become a
secret witness and testified that her husband had murdered
Leyla hanım, his 'kuma' (spare wife).
When A.T.C. returned to Diyarbakır, though, her identity was
revealed. In any event, in her testimony, A.T.C. revealed that
A.C. had been using drugs for more than a year and she
related what happened on the day of Leyla's murder: "My
husband A.C. had two children from Leyla and 3 from me.
Also, I'm currently pregnant (!). On the night of the murder,
A.C. took drugs. When he woke up he had Leyla and our
three children come into the room. He had everyone undress,
even looking at the baby's diaper. We protested. Then we went
downstairs for breakfast and he found an eggplant in the trash.
He pointed a revolver at Leyla's head and screamed 'who had
sex with this eggplant?!' Then he fired the gun."
The public prosecutor opened a case against A.C. for murder,
carrying an unlicensed weapon and threatening with a weapon
and asked for a life sentence plus 6 years (!).
Evidently more egg-citing than A.C.
